Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón
Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón is 380 km by road: the 14-hour day trips compared, driving Route 1 yourself, the national park's parking fee, and where to break the journey.
From Reykjavik City Hall to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Boat Tours and Cafe is 380 km by road along Route 1, about five and a half hours at the wheel without stops, each way. That is why the day trips from Reykjavik last 14 hours or more. Gray Line Iceland’s Reykjavik: South Coast, Diamond Beach, and Jökulsárlón Tour is one of them, from $234 a person (checked November 2026), with Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss on the way.
The calendar above is Gray Line’s day trip, with 1,579 reviews (checked November 2026).

The day trips
Every day trip leaves Reykjavik early and returns late. What differs is the size of the vehicle, the stops on the way and the boat:
- BusTravel Iceland (*Reykjavik: Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach Tour*, from $214 in current promotion (usually $237)): about 14 hours by bus; Hvolsvöllur, lunch at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, an hour and a half at the lagoon, the Diamond Beach, dinner in Vík, Seljalandsfoss. The boat is an option at booking, April to October.
- Gray Line (the calendar above): about 14.5 hours; Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss as well, the amphibian boat a summer option paid on site.
- Gateway to Iceland (GTIce) (*From Reykjavik: Glacier Lagoon and Fjaðrárgjúfur Canyon Tour*, from $230): a minibus for 19 at most, pickup 7:30 to 8:00, 14 to 16 hours, Fjaðrárgljúfur in summer; it needs six passengers to run.

Driving yourself
Route 1 is the only road. The national park says Jökulsárlón is accessible all year from it, but in winter check the road before you leave: the Road Administration posts closures and conditions on umferdin.is (and on its traffic line, 1777), and Safetravel carries the alerts. At the lagoon the road crosses the outlet on a single-lane bridge from 1967; the Road Administration closes it for a night when it repairs the bridge or paves the road, and on the night of 27 September 2026 it noted that there is no detour.
Parking at Jökulsárlón costs a regional fee set by Vatnajökull National Park, the same at Skaftafell: 1,110 ISK for a car with five seats or fewer, 1,440 ISK for six to nine seats, 450 ISK for a motorcycle. Cameras read the plate on arrival; you pay in the Parka app or at the machines in the car park, and the fee is valid until midnight on the day you pay, with half off at a second fee area of the park the same day.
With a car, the sensible plan is a night in the region: the Skaftafell area (56.9 km by road) or Höfn (65.3 km) puts you about an hour from the lagoon, so you can be at the shore in the morning and book the boat in season or an ice cave tour in winter.
