Jökulsárlón in Winter

Jökulsárlón from November to April: the boat seasons end, the ice cave tours run, the café stays open, short days on the drive, road checks, and which day trip suits winter.

Updated November 2026

Jökulsárlón in winter is a different trip from the summer one: the lagoon boats’ listed seasons end by mid-November, the ice cave tours on the glacier behind it run, the café stays open, and a day trip from Reykjavik spends its first and last hours driving in the dark. The national park says the area is accessible all year from Route 1. The From Reykjavik: Glacier Lagoon and Fjaðrárgjúfur Canyon Tour from Gateway to Iceland (GTIce) runs in a minibus for 19 and, in winter, watches for the northern lights on the way back; it is from $230 a person (checked November 2026).

The day trip in winter

A day trip lasts about 14 hours, and on 1 November 2026 Reykjavik had eight hours between sunrise and sunset, so part of the drive out and most of the drive back are in the dark; the hours at the lagoon and on the beach are the ones that matter. The Gateway to Iceland (GTIce) minibus skips Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon in winter and keeps an eye on the sky on the way home; it needs six passengers to run, and it refunds in full if it cancels for weather. BusTravel Iceland’s *Reykjavik: Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon & Diamond Beach Tour*, from $214 in current promotion (usually $237), runs all year; its boat option is offered from April to October.

Ice caves instead of boats

The guided activity at the lagoon in winter is the ice cave tour: a 4x4 ride onto Breiðamerkurjökull and a walk to a cave chosen on the day for safety, with helmets and crampons. From Reykjavik it needs a night in the region, which is what the two-day tours offer, although their caves are on Falljökull, in Skaftafell, not at the lagoon. The ice cave tours explain the rules, and two- and three-day trips compare the ways to fit one in.

The road in winter

Check the road the evening before and the morning of the trip if you drive: the Road Administration posts closures and conditions on umferdin.is and its traffic line 1777, and Safetravel carries the alerts. Its own advice is that roads have been known to close without warning as severe storms hit. A tour operator makes that call for you and refunds or reschedules when it cancels for weather.

Winter on the south coast is also the season for the northern lights. The day trips are not northern lights tours, but the late drive back is in the dark, and the Gateway to Iceland (GTIce) minibus lists a northern lights stop in winter when the sky allows. For a night out dedicated to them, northern-lights-tour-iceland.com covers the evening tours from Reykjavik and what happens when the sky stays cloudy.
