Jökulsárlón Boat Tour

The Jökulsárlón boat tours start from the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Boat Tours and Cafe on the lagoon’s shore by Route 1, and there are two: an amphibian boat of 30 to 40 minutes that drives into the water from the shore, and a Zodiac of 1 hour 15 minutes that goes much closer to the glacier. They run from May into the autumn. Where the boats start

Both boats leave from the shore beside the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Boat Tours and Cafe, Reynivellir 3, 781 Hornafjörður, on the lagoon side of Route 1 in Vatnajökull National Park. The company runs the boats and the café, which stays open all year. A second company, Ice Lagoon, runs Zodiac tours in summer from its blue truck on the main car park by the lagoon; it puts the glacier face about 8 km from its starting point.

The amphibian suits families and anyone who wants the icebergs up close without a long time in the cold; the company says it is suitable for all ages, and guests are offered a taste of the old glacier ice. The Zodiac is the one for the glacier front: smaller, faster and open, it needs a minimum age of 10 or a height of 130 cm.

When the boat seasons end

The amphibian’s tour hours run 10:00 to 17:00 from October to 15 November; the company’s FAQ adds that the boats usually run from early May through October, depending on weather and ice. The listed seasons end 15 November (amphibian) and October (Zodiac); the company says it may still run outside those dates if conditions allow, so for a winter date ask before counting on a boat. The day trips still go, and the shore and the Diamond Beach are open all year. In winter the guided activity at the lagoon is the ice cave tour.

Kayak and Fjallsárlón

In summer you can also paddle the lagoon: IceGuide’s *Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Kayaking Tour* is 90 minutes in sit-on-top kayaks from the Glacier Lagoon car park, from $155 (checked November 2026), for swimmers aged 14 and over.

Fjallsárlón, 10.9 km by road to the west, is a smaller lagoon with its own Zodiac boats. Fjallsárlón Iceberg Boat Tours meets at its reception behind the FROST restaurant, walks about ten minutes to the dock and spends about 75 minutes in all, April to November, for 11,300 ISK (age 5 and over). Its *Fjallsárlón: Secluded Glacier Hike and Iceberg Boat Tour* adds two hours on the Fjallsjökull glacier, from $235 (checked November 2026), in summer.
